Ben Godfrey

Ben started playing the cornet at the age of 10 with the Bradwell Silver Brass band and received his formative training with Alan Jenkin, and later went on to study with John Berryman during his time as a member of the Northamptonshire County Youth Brass Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. At 16 he became principal cornet with the Rigid Containers Group Brass Band.

He went on to study at Salford University with Dr. David King and was appointed principal cornet with the Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band at the age of 18, helping the band win many European Brass Band Championship titles.
In 1997 aged 21, Ben was head hunted by Director of Music - Major David Marshall, to join the Band of Her Majesty’s Coldstream Guards as cornet soloist. Ben took over the cornet and trumpet soloist role in the band from the late Howerd Simpson. Highlights include touring as soloist around the Japans major concert halls, and playing as trumpet soloist in a major concert in New York City during the Hope, Unity and Solace Tour, one month after the terror attacks on the world trade centre.

After five years in the Coldstream Band, Ben went on to study with Howard Snell, James Watson and Paul Archibald at the Royal Academy of Music after receiving an EMI Scholarship. On graduating from the Royal Academy, he went on to work as a professional freelance trumpet player with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and many other London Chamber Orchestras. He also worked on many West End Shows including Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, the Drowsy Chaperone, West Side Story, Dancing in the Streets, Jerry Springer the Opera, the Beautiful and Damned and Wicked. He has recorded film and television soundtracks from Harry Potter to the Channel 4 News theme .

In 2008 he joined the Central Band of the Royal Air Force as co-principal trumpet and became lead trumpet with the RAF Squadronaires . Musical highlights with the RAF Central Band include BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3 Broadcasts as a featured soloist. Tours to Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and Jersey. Live at The Royal Wedding, and Television appearances with the RAF Squadronaires for ITV and the BBC Television Festival of Remembrance. Ben has also recorded many times as a soloist with the Central Band and Squadronaires and has featured on two award winning albums recorded on the Decca label.

The 'Symphony' trumpet is a fantastic instrument in a symphony orchestra, chamber or solo setting. It impresses with its breadth of sound and warm, lyrically timbre, whilst still being able to deliver large volumes of sound and projection which are required in symphony orchestra playing.
