Elland Silver Youth Band

Elland Silver Youth Band was formed in 1995 by the bands current conductor Miss Samantha Harrison as a way of sustaining Elland Silver Band into the future. The band is based in Elland, a small town, close to Halifax in the Calder Valley and is one of the longest established community organisations within the district.

Today the youth band has 45 members aged from 11 – 18 years, and is considered one of the countries leading youth ensembles. We also operate a Training, Starter and Beginner Band and a Percussion Academy. In total we have over 100 children and young people involved in our music education programme. Many of our players have progressed into our championship section senior band and have gone onto play for Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, Fairey’s & Brighouse & Rastrick Bands.

In 2010, the band was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer group’s recognition of the voluntary work and community service the band has given.

In October 2016, The Worship Company of Musicians presented their Musical Director, Samantha Harrison with The Mortimer Medal for services to Youth Bands. The presentation was made at the National Brass Band Championships held in the Royal Albert Hall, London.

In 2017, the band became European Youth Development Brass Band Champions in Ostend and received an invitation to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth at Birmingham Symphony, Hall and in November 2017, performed at the Music for Youth Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

In 2018, the band also performed alongside Brighouse and Rastrick at the prestigious Brass Arts Festival held at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

In January 2019, the band were crowned British Open Youth Brass Band Championships.
